I've put stilt - as a stint is properly called a 'Little Stint' I think.

Not true - there are many other stints - Temminck's, Red-necked, Long-toed,etc

Exodermis is of plants- ie botanical, Epidermis is of skin ie biological. The clue relates to plants so I would plump for exodermis

Chambers has exodermis as, the outer layer of a root, so I guess it's one of those 'swings or roundabouts. ' That's the beauty of crosswords , what the compiler sees is not always what each completer sees . Enjoy!
