I should be glad of any help with 18 across (is it Hilary; if so why?) and 24 across. I'm toying with hype, but where does Longfellow's conclusion fit in? And why noir? Bless you for any help!

Haven't found out too much but Ainsworth wrote a novel called Hilary St Ives V1. I couldn't find out any details about what it's about. Perhaps you'll have better luck.
I wonder if 24a could be hype, but I haven't looked into that yet.

24a Longfellow wrote Hyperion..take away noir to give HYPE.
