I seem to remember there was a 'song' about this around 1966 when I lived in Australia but no-one can confirm. Anyone any ideas?

There was the song 'Abraham Martin and John' by Marvin Gaye, 1970.

Dion recorded it in 1968. There may be earlier releases. (eg Harry Belafonte, but I don't know when). I hope this is the song you are thinking of. It mentions Abraham (Lincoln), Martin (Luther King), John (F Kennedy) and Bobby (Kennedy).
