A reference to cricket

One "linesman" in question was Rudyard Kipling. Here's a quote from The Islanders:

"Then ye returned to your trinkets; then ye contented your souls
With the flannelled fools at the wicket or the muddied oafs at the goals."

Bernard Shaw borrowed it, describing cricket as "eleven flannelled fools chasing a red ball, with eleven thousand fools cheering them"
