I haven't got far with the clues yet, but the message I have worked out as "Include punctuation ignore diagonal bits" ....whatever that may mean !
The first T is wrong. It should be an N.

The S is wrong. It is an I
Some of the answers are not long enough to fill all the squares in the grid. That's where the "punctuation" comes into play.

You need to think about doing something with letters that have diagonal (sloping) elements in them.

Thanks both, am I right in thinking these are the letters A, X etc, that have diagonal strokes and that they need to be ignored in order to reveal the answer.
X and V would disappear altogether because they only have diagonal bits, but K, for example, would become an I and R would become a P.

I hope that makes sense.

Thanks Tichfield, therefore Q = O, R = P? I still can't seem to get it to work, for example 33A I have ?e??p?nex??, when I eliminate the X and put the letters on a word-finder tool , it comes with no appropriate solutions. Sorry to be such a pain but this is driving me nuts.
In 33ac the P is in fact an R.

The solution I had was NEVERNEVER
thanks to this thread I have been able to complete, but should you remove 'diagonal bits' from the whole grid or just the clashing cells ?
judypark if you need any answers just ask, mad max
The whole grid, hence consistently in the preamble
understood C thankyou mad max
Question Author
For 23 D I have fiesta which gives me an "a" in the middle of "nevernever" Have I gone wrong somewhere?
the 'diagonal bits' are removed from A leaving -
dont forget R becomes P etc
ps none of completed grid will make any sense
Question Author
Thanks mad max, I hadn't considered the A as a dash. Starting to make more sense now.
Question Author
Just one I'm not sure of 29A. Is it releasee?
On = Re
Grassland = Lea
To consider = See
Question Author
Thanks Cruciverbali, just nice to have it confirmed.
Question Author
Last query honest. On filling it in I am unsure whether the first W in 8D has to come out?
I removed it completely as a W has all diagonal bits, I think Im right ? ( they are sloping if not exactly diagonal )
Question Author
Thanks max, I shall be glad to see this one disappear into post box.
