might as well start a thread on this week's ev. So, how's everyone doing? I got off to a blinding start and then ground to a halt after about 12 clues. Could someone confirm 10 as IMP(E)TRATION and explain the cryptic part for me? Thanks as ever! Hope you all had a nice weekend.

Have visitors arriving today, so will not be able to contribute much, but will look at it and check on-line as and when I can. Getting there, but still a few left to do. One query. Haven't got 30 yet and clue says 5 letters but only four spaces. I assume this is a misprint?

The answer is capric with "C" as the interloper leaving anagram of pair.
I agree with slaney as to phrase, but it seems that we are all stuck in this lower right hand quadrant.
As a thought, when I first started the crossword, and saw that there were missing letters, the title of the piece may well be the siGn of the beast = zodiacal sign = Capricorn ; and we already have APRI as part of the answer.

Yes I thought it would be 'sign' but must admit vaguely had Biblical sign (666) rather than star sign in my head.

Also now just stuck on 27,28, and 32..

The sum of the 36 clues 1+2+3 etc..to 36 is 666 which would go with the Si(g)n of the Beast.

The sine of 666 is -0.80901699
The square of 1+4 is 25
25 x -O.80901 is approx. -20
Where do we go from there ?

Clutching at straws now, but around 5 is the adjective "equine" but this is not one entry that the preamble specifies.

the answer to 5 relates to things five ... of the fifth order, fivefold, in fives ...

5 x 0.8 = 4
4 squared = 16 then as above.

square(sin(666)*(4+1)) gives ~ 16.3627124 ... not nearly as close as 4.999999 ... is to 5. As I said, look at the meaning of the answer to 5.
