Gris(t)

Many tks, K, as ever for your help.
'Arms' is the answer, I believe. That's 'a' + 'rms' = an abbreviation (reduced) for 'root mean square'. This has to do with standard deviations in statistics. To arm can, of course, mean 'supply', as in "Armed with this information, I was able to...."

Quizmonster - tks for that: I thought of arms (as in supplies) but could not work out the other aspect. I've also not been able to find gris, as proposed by Kayakamina, in my reference works. Tks to you both.
'Gris' is in Chambers Dictionary, PJ. Apart from the French connection, meaning 'grey', it is a variant of 'gree' which is an obsolete/dialect word meaning degree, rank etc. I can see where K got the idea of grist = supplies, but I don't see any connection with a "value of statistical significance" in the word 'gris'. That is certainly covered by the 'rms' abbreviation, however. But, over to you, obviously.
