6 down - When head has book destroyed (4) - ?n?e
10 across - Still check if there's time for leading resistance (2,4) - ?t?e?t - seems to be 'at rest', but don't fully understand why.

Thank you, both - especially for the explanation of 10 across - very good clue. Not so impressed with 6 down, though, but I'm sure you're both right.
Apologies for my clumsy explanation of 10a, but pleased you were able to decipher it !

Bonce as an answer to 6d satisfies the elements of the clue.

When......once

Head.....Bonce

Book destroyed ( Remove B book)

Result (B)once

I'm probably just being 'picky', but I don't feel that 'destroy' is a close enough synonym of 'remove' to warrant its use in this sense. After all, it doesn't follow that, when something is destroyed, there's nothing left. In fact, I would say that is seldom the case. I'm not saying the clue is wrong - just that it's not one of the best .
