I am in the process of getting divorced, my wife has petitioned me on the grounds of unreasonable behaviour but i disagree with the content but want the divorce. i must stress that i have done nothing wrong, but according to my solicitor i will have to give my ex wife 60% of everything which means me losing my house, which i owned prior to marrying her, are there any laws that give protection to men in divorce. or do women always get 60%.

If you want the divorce then the unreasonable behaviour thing is just a common term used to get the ball rolling so I wouldn't bother about that, it makes no difference really. As to the settlement, well everything has to go into a pot, all your debts, assets, pension everything and then it is up to you two to decide how you want to divide it. She does not automatically get 60% or any percentage, it will depend on the length of the marriage, what assets were there before the marriage, each parties future needs and income and whether there are children involved. So if you can't agree then you will have to let the Court decide, but that could mean large legal bills. If you can pay her off then you could keep the house probably, but you may not be able to afford to. So I suppose the concise answer is, the law is there to protect both of you, but will take your individual circumstances into account.
