I have now looked in Chambers and it does indeed show Cetera Desunt meaning " the rest ARE missing" ..... as indicated by Kulatron above. I should have double checked there before raising the perceived irregularity!

lector .. the answer to 40a derives from a French term relating to April 1st activities, where in fact the custom originated.

What are you looking for in relation to 30d, the answer is in fact shown as an entry in Chambers indicating " someone who steals the purse or from the purse of another"

Hi O-ice ... the answer to 5d is "Piers".

Piers Plowman is the title of a Middle English poem (narrative by William Lagland), that is set in the Malvern Hills. It has on occasions been compared to Chaucer's Canterbury Tales.

Thank you so much sarumite for the answer which I never would have gotten and also for the interesting link which I have printed out and will read at my leisure later this evening. Since the link mentions Chaucer it brought to mind that I have Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales' volumes 1 and 2 in the original old English, but have to admit they were too much like hard work to read thoroughly. However, their sentimental value (to me) remains.
