Sir Lancelot Mail on Sunday 1 Oct, clue 12A

I can't work out the answer to 12A - clue is 'rock such as basalt'...I have the letters W?I? but I don't think the word WEIR is correct. Can anyone help me, please, as I've searched for some time and starting to get word blindness! Many thanks.

Thank you very much...the word search sites I used did not give me this word...so at least I have learned something today from your answer! (Still hopeful about winning the pen after several years of trying!)
I found it on following site but didn't post it as mac44 had already done so, it is short for whin-stone.

Thanks, Sarumite...I thought I'd searched on the (AB) site, with the most obvious entries, but the answer didn't appear there. Thanks for the help and the link. I actually do make the effort to look back and learn the info I didn't previously know. But surely hasn't everyone in the UK who reads the Mail and likes Crosswords already won the pen?! It must be our turn soon, unless previous winners are entering so all the members of their family can be given a pen! Thanks again and good luck...
