Wend...Turn (change tack) W (key)+ end (finish)
I would have said BEND. (B + end)

In crossword clues, 'key' usually refers to a musical key, ie A, B, C, D, E, F or G.

To bend is to turn.
Wend....'To turn to the opposite tack' Chambers (Naut)

Compass keys in crosswords are N S E W
kayakamina, What is your Chambers reference for a 'compass key'? I have never heard of the term and Google doesn't come up with much either.

In my crosswords experience, NESW are usually points or directions.
My reference is the 'bible' of crossword setters. Ximenes 'The art of the crossword'. As you may know this formed the basis of the modern crossword with it's definitions of constructions , word plays ,abbreviations etc.

If you believe Bend fits then so be it. Good evening K
