Found many definitions of pollard - all googled, libraried & read out! Any hints as to animal, tree or coin - or something else. Last Q & its driving me mad!
Not sure what you are asking? Pollarding relating to a tree is when they cut it right back to stop it growing too big, and it looks a peculiar shape for a while. Does that help you at all?
I managed to find this one today by Googling 'Edward 1' together with different combinations of pollard(s), London, history. I don't remember exactly which one worked but you don't need the words 'ban' or 'import'. The site I found it on contained verbatim records of legal decisions of the time in London. If you read them through you'll find the answer. I can't really add anything else without giving the answer and you're asking for hints only. Good luck.
Didn't get as far as the full OED in the Library, but this sense of it is in Chambers and Websters, although the penny didn't drop until we started chasing the historical references...
Thanks Juliefer - think i got there in the end. What a convoluted question! Mind I haven't found the London borough yet - glad that's not part of the answer!
Glad you got it, wanderwot. I agree about the question being very much less than clearly worded.
You've probably seen this yourself but, if you'd like confirmation of your answer, someone else asked for and was given it on this site - posting was either lateish yesterday or early today.
