it is Empire Day.

Collins dictionary says used to be anniversary of Victoria's birth (May 24) but now second monday in March. Do not know why they always change things!

You are correct - my trusty Collins English Dictionary states Empire Day is the former name of Commonwealth Day and is on 24 May.

Having been in junior school in the early 1940's, the 24th of May is Empire Day!! It is one of those facts of life thumped into my skull at the same time as reciting my tables. We used to sing all those patriotic songs, now sadly very non PC, have school parades and study the world map where most of it was still pink. Must say it didn't do me any harm, apart from instilling a bit of national pride, very desirable at the time.
