A bouncer called Benny??

If anyone ever mentions club bouncers, my father always asks, 'Was his name Benny?' and then winks. He refuses to tell me what he means and it's driving me potty. I would really like to know if this was an old character in TV, or literature, or whether there was a real person called Benny who worked for the Krays or Richardson's. Please help, or I'm going to strangle my father.
