if this is a newish mp3 walkman? did you not get a manual with it or is it second hand if you did not...

I'd guess audio in allows you to plug in another source of music to play on the Walkman, whilst audio out would allow you to plug something into the Walkman that will play whatever the Walkman is playing, such as a HiFi amp/speakers.
