I am sure the club believed he was the right choice - although their faith appears not to have been rewarded.
He was cheap
And it appears you do get what you pay for!
The wally with the brolly saw no return from all the lolly. What folly! Golly! Now he's not jolly :(
For the same reason footballers are 'released' by one club only to be successful at another. No doubt Mike Ashley and co believed that he could do a job for them.
Old boy net work ,some managers have had more clubs than bubba .

Sacking doesn't always mean inevitable failure in future jobs (e.g. Tony Pulis was sacked by Pompey, but has done great things since - certainly achieving far more than Newcastle have since then)

Newcastle hired McClaren in good faith I'm sure.
Claudio Ranieri; sacked by Chelsea, Valencia, Parma, Juventus, Roma, Inter Milan, Monaco and Greece. Wonder what he's up to these days?
Nice one Ken.
The short answer, because your owner is a d*ckhead.

Pardew had had enough and quit. Your caretaker manager finished two places above relegation and had a win rate of 15%. In the extensive search for a replacement, you got someone who had won 1 trophy in England, which was a League Cup, 11 years earlier. McClaren only went there because he was stupid, or desperate.
Maybe he was neither stupid nor desperate, Gromit. Maybe, just maybe, he believed that he was the man to turn the tide at Newcastle and that the rewards - even for abject failure - were too much to resist.
Rafa Benitez in charge at Newcastle.

Yep, only confirming what's been suspected for a few days - one of the 'Sundays' actually hinted at it at the weekend.
Alex Ferguson was sacked by St Mirren, so Man Utd shouldn't have touched him with a bargepole.
Inverting bankers' logic, if you set the salary low enough, top staff will come to you.

:O)

Yes, it's clearly ridiculous to appoint a manager who's been sacked elsewhere.

For example, what the hell were the Leicester City board thinking of when they appointed a manager who'd been sacked by Valencia, Parma and Juventus, as well as by two national sides (Monaco and Greece)? It was obviously a completely stupid thing to do!

Oh, hang on a minute though, aren't Leicester doing rather well nowadays?

;-)
perhaps it would help if newcastle bought some decent players for once!
Buenchico @ 19:56) You must've missed my post @ 14:10:-) And Monaco are not a national side, they are a French Ligue 1 outfit - he took them up from Ligue 2 and they finished the 2013/14 season in 2nd place behind PSG. He was rewarded with the sack in 2014!
