There is little news on what happened afterwards but as the number plate was plain to see, I hope they threw the book at the lorry driver !

The crossing is just after a bend. The lorry driver might not have realised the speed of the van and had to overtake to avoid hitting it.

Must have missed the signs telling him that he was approaching a level crossing as well !

Perhaps if he wasn't going so fast, or so close behind the van, he would have had time to brake.

There is a level crossing near Bridgend that I use once or twice a month, and I see things like this very often.

Should have his Licence removed (without an anesthetic)

it'z all happening oop t north !
Snow Manch and roads ungritted ( of course - what do we pay our council taxes for ? )

and I was crossing Oldham Road with bottle of milk and yellow dog for identification as the light faded- and really did think : " god if she doesnt stop soon, she will knock me down ". The parked up drivers in the queue, took on horrified looks

I waved my dog and bottle of milk ( large - one litre ) and shouted "you nearly hit me you stupid batch" and she wound down her window and shouted back
well I didnt you possed old furt, so poss off !

and we went our separate ways - with the dog with its paws on its ears saying, 'really! what language ! '
How do I know? I wasn't there, I don't know the roads, I don't know what the signs are like!

Although the HGV driver has no real defence here ummm's post is very valid. Banging the brakes on hard on an artic can cause all sorts danger, especially near or on a bend like jackknifing etc
Hi mikey
am i right in thinking that the girlie drivers on this thread think it is GOOD driving ?
That lorry driver besides getting done should get to spec savers. Double solid White lines down the middle of the road means no overtaking.

I totally agree joebus, especially a 'professional' driver but if the driver had to take evasive action due to lack of concentration then banging brakes on is not wise in an artic, laden or unladen.

There was no evasive action, he knew exactly what he was doing.
I meant as an example baldric ( i know i should have made my self more clear) and we (and you) don't really know what happened although does look like a case of impatience, speeding or whatever

You are quite right and that ,it appears, may be the only offence committed by the HGV driver. No bells ,gongs ,lights operating as far as we know on the crossing. The HGV driver has just negotiated a hazard.Being high up he probably has better vision of oncoming traffic than any one lower down in the van. He has passed the bend vanishing points to negotiate his speed for the right gear and has decided to apply his acceleration points.
But of course we are not familiar with the road layout and prevailing conditions at the time. I see no specific offence of ovetaking on the approach to a level crossing ,of any type, but certainly the offence is complete by crossing the double white lines. Dangerous Driving? Well the local police are going for it so might just well be. They know the geography.
