Hi there
I have a friend who has come to my house for over 4 years about once a week and smokes in the lounge, when other friends come she goes into the kitchen, it doesnt really bother me but last time she was here the next day i went into atrial fibrillation in and out for 24 hours. I cant help wondering if that was partly due to the passive smoking. Anyway she is coming tonight and I want to ask her really nicely to take it outside but she might be offended knowing shes been coming here for years and smoking what do abers think?

Just explain politely you have concerns which are exacerbated you think by fag smoke.Ask her if she could go outside to smoke. Your pad.Your rules. Tact and politeness wins.

Definitely ask her not to smoke inside your house. How could she get offended ? She is making your house stink and you ( maybe) ill.
Of course it's okay. Smokers are well use to going outside.
I would never smoke in someone's house even when invited to, I think it is rather rude.
Tell her your gp has advised you not to be in any Smokey areas. ( a wee white lie I know )
it is VERY unlikely that passive smoking put you into Atrial fibrillation
definitely NOT on the list of common causes

why not cough loudly and say - since I went into heart failure - my lungs have become very sensitive .....

interesting scenario georgie.
I gave up smoking at the start of 2015. I have friends that smoke, my son smokes, I live in a multi story block of flats so going into the garden isnt an option. I asked any visitors (son, friends) to confine their smoking to the kitchen and to stand by the open window. Not been a problem. (for them or me)
Also when I DID smoke, I had an elderly friend who had a heart attack and had to give up smoking. Anytime I visited I went outside to smoke even though he insisted that it was ok to smoke indoors as it didnt bother him.
I think you ought to ask her to respect your wishes and if she doesnt sack her off.
Quite right!!! I have done the same on occasions. I even had a friend who wanted to smoke a spliff!!!! He was soon sent packing!
Would never allow anyone to smoke in my house. When I was a smoker many years ago I would always go outside for a cigarette both at home and when visiting friends.
I have Atrial Fibrillation. Collapsed last week . Waiting for cardio version. Fag smoke doesn't bring it on but what the hell.
You decide if you want to smell like an ashtray or not.
Ex Smoker.
I'm a smoker and even I don't smoke in my own home - I hang out of the window (2nd floor flat). Would never dream of lighting up in someone else's house, unless they smoked themselves and invited me to join them.

Your friend should respect your wishes, and unless she's a muppet she will understand.
The only thing that I could think of that might bring on atrial fibrillation would be the stress of having to tell your friend not to smoke but seeing that you are not stressed about the situation, I doubt there is a connection
Yes, very few people I know allow smoking in the house, even those who smoke themselves. If any smokers come here they go into the garden to smoke never in the house.
Anybody that tried to smoke in my house would be TOLD not asked to not smoke.
Your house, your life, your choice. If you are polite I'm sure no offence should be taken. Naturally after all this time it is best to word it carefully, say you have a favour to ask if you like, but I'd hope she would be happy to comply.
Smoking will be bad for your cat. They are at risk of developing chest problems. It isn't going to be a major problem with a visiting smoker - but it is still a concern.

How did it go gordiescotland1 ? Did you manage to find the words to ask your friend not to smoke in your house? Hope you did.

Yes I was really nice about it and she didnt smoke in my house problem solved
My wife used to smoke in the greenhouse, never indoors. Now she smokes those electronic cigarettes. I still think they stink, and I'm sure they make me cough. I miss the greenhouse days. But she smells better, no stinky hair, clothes etc.
Just tell her gently that smoking in your house is not acceptable. Ask her to go outside to smoke. I have friends that smoke, but they go outside to do so. Our eldest lad and his wife both smoke, but not even in their own house!
