An excellent challenge from Sabre, and certainly had to use all the available information to make headway on this. Full quotation and author only revealing itself right at the end.

Did anyone else attempt to build the grid before working out the majority of the clues? I'm relatively new to Listening and all that cold-solving was a bit beyond me but I managed to piece together the grid from the symmetry requirement (and a few leaps of faith) and figure the rest of the clues from intersections. Wouldn't have stood a chance otherwise!
Pretty impressive way of doing it, I'd say!
Just finished! Brilliant puzzle. Has anyone noticed that in the lower half of the completed grid the second entry in row AN and the second entry in row ND can interchange their first letter, giving two possible solutions?
In response to twoshortplan, that is not possible because the first letter of the word in row D is not a clash cell and so does not get its letter changed.
