I think a mixture of both are important for a developing mind.
^^ Agree with 1ozzy, in this day and age it would be unwise to disallow children from using 'gizmos' as the technology becomes an integral part of their everyday lives later on. However controls on the type of games played should be in the hands of the parents to ensure they are age appropriate and preferably not played all of the time.
Same goes for books - as 1ozzy has said, the ability for children to use their imagination can help a child become a 'wider thinking' person whom looks for the possibilities rather than just the probabilities of life.
But again, the books must be age specific to begin with is you wouldn't give a 6 year old a jilly cooper to read.
But, all in all a healthy balance between immersion in either books or gizmo's should be maintained to ensure interaction between family & peers does not stop.
It's all common sense really.
Nowt wrong with info gathering but I think dabate homework is meant to be your own views. Ask Google for advatages & for disadvantages of each ?
