What letters have you already got
pro(tuber)ance
. . . but that is only 12 letters and it can't be protuberances since the clue says lump (singular)

Protuberancey

Forget that spelt it wrong Sorry
Protuberation
Clue structure points to 'protuberances' ('prances' around 'o' + 'tuber') but as you say Gen2, we need 'lumps' to qualify . . . (maybe a typo??)

. . . but now pration does not mean capers (or anything)!

O TUBER was good for old potato so a 7 letter word meaning capers is needed around it so the whole means lump.

BTW I've looked at my DT cryptic today and don't see this clue anywhere.  Not in Sunday's either.

sorry johnalex, crossed with your post.
No probs Gen2  -  we're all on the case!  'Lumps' would solve it  -  Mat, please confirm . . .
oh dear...I've opened a can of worms here!

I wrote this from memory as crossword was days old...

I think it was probably "lumps" not "lump".

Thanks all! I can now sleep.......

So can we all - Thanks Mat_D
