What do I do?

As some of you may remember, due to my Cancer & osteoporosis I have been struggling physically for quite some time.

After thinking about it at some length , and putting it off, I am going to bite the bullet and get a cleaner to help.

I am a bit embarrassed as to what I do while she's there.

I expect most cleaners call while the householder is at work but in my case I cant get out much so will be there most of the time.

I will feel really lazy sitting in the chair as she cleans around me.

Should I go upstairs while she's downstairs & vice versa? What do you think?

Hi, Millie.....you sound as if you find it hard to sit and watch others work.. difficult I know if you are used to doing things for yourself. Do explain that health problems mean you need help now and then do you have something you can do while keeping out of the way?.....Knitting... letter writing....the dreaded accounts? That might make you feel less...

work it out between you - it's unlikely he or she will care, and perhaps just clean round you !
sit in the chair and supervise, you are paying her wages, that way you will know what has and has not been done in the allotted time. good luck.

Thanks guys, I just feel she will think me lazy.
There is no way she (or he) will think you are lazy - why don't you just tell her when she's there? Presumably you are going to interview the person before you take her on? - have the discussion then!
Read out the crossword to him/ her if you get stuck :-) It'll help both of your time pass quicker whilst they are cleaning.
Don't be worried about what to do, they are there to do a job and are probably used to both sides if the coin (employers that don't want to acknowledge them at all, and employers that love following them round for a good natter). You'll pick up vibes as to how your cleaner likes to work best.
Agree with Boxy. Explain your health issues. Not that I believe they'd think you lazy....just to put your own mind at rest...
Are you getting someone from a cleaning company, or an independent cleaner? Not sure how one appoints a cleaner these days, I've never had one!

Don't think like that, silliemillie, they will most probably realise that there is a good reason why you need a cleaner.

Yes, I think I will explain why I cant do it myself, I am reluctant to do it anyway as I have always run my house fairly efficiently but have finally given in.
It's not a weakness on your part, millie - it's your state of health. They'll understand.

Thanks again, you have all put my mind at rest,

Boxtops - I was thinking of just approaching cleaning Companys as, like yourself, have never had one before so have no way of going about it otherwise.
look out for cards in your local shop/postoffice
You shouldn't have to explain anything at all. They need a job, you need a job doing. Simple.
I just sit and read the morning paper. I do make her a cup of coffee.....she then has to wash up the cup.
Lol Craft :-)
I know how you feel. Offer her a cup of tea, ask how she is, if she wants to chat, then chat with her while she's in the same room, otherwise get on with something else. Computer stuff or letter writing or whatever.

Thanks for all your replies, it's just that Gness has summed me up perfectly, I do,find it difficult to sit and watch others work when I am so used to doing it myself. I will have to learn.
Thank you, Millie...and let us know how it works out......x
whatever you do don't clean up before she arrives like some do
