Barbara Hall, 84, the Sunday Times puzzles editor, has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s birthday honours for services to crosswords and newspapers. Hall’s puzzles have graced the pages of The Sunday Times for 32 years. Her career began when she was paid two guineas for a puzzle published in 1938.

She worked with codes in the WRNS, based on the east coast in the second world war, and since then has compiled crosswords on “every subject imaginable”. After nearly 70 years devising puzzles, she believes she has had “several thousand” published. “I like to keep going,” she says. “I think it keeps the Alzheimer’s away.”
When you work the Sunday Times you just have to get used to little quirks like anagrams that don't anagram, little boys named "bet", etc. I prefer to think of these errors as part of the puzzle's charm.
