I thought The Inquisition had died out in mediaeval times.

But for the 24 years preceding his election as Pope Benedict XVI, Cardinal Ratzenberger was head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith (the CDF) ...

... a department of The Vatican formerly known as ... The Inquisition.

Priests and Cardinals who "strayed" from The Vatican's official line in their teachings and sermons were hauled before Cardinal Razenberger, and "investigated".

One practice which particularly incurred the Cardinal's wrath was the Betrayal of the Confidence of the Papacy.

Or, to put it in simple terms ... if you told the authorities about any Priest who was shagging children, you would be hauled before Carinal Ratzenberger for punishment.

It's always interesting to learn the background of the people who are chosen to be Pope.

Pope Benedict, Vicar of God, moral leader, Protector of Paedophiles, Punisher of anyone who reported the Paedophiles.

Interesting sort of chap.

Whoa jj. A bit too serious for this time of night. I've had a glass or two of wine you know.
What was the source of your data, JJ, that reporting paedos to the authorities was treated as such.

It also begs the question that when this happened, and it was then known to the church, who then took action.............?
The Cathlic Church is corrupt and always has been all the way down. Anyone who has studied history will see that. The Nazi so called catholics were not even excommunicated. ( Papal Bull, Indugences etc.) Wicked is the word actually.
RJUKL. Are you saying all catholics are wicked?
Bloody hell jj, couldn't you have put this in Religion, not CB. I may have to go over to SAB now.
Of course not. It is the Institution that is the Catholic Church that is corrupt. The people who have been forced to grow up from birth have been so indoctrinated that they think they will be in a state of limbo if they die with unconfessed sins which a priest has not absolved. I am glad I was not born into that particular form of fear of God.
All religion is bunkum
the Spanish Inquisition covered, er, Spain, and was abolished in the 1830s. This is/was a different body, the Supreme Sacred Congregation of the Roman and Universal Inquisition.
I agree there Panic.
RJKUL .I was sent to a catholic convent school, taught by nuns at times looking back they were very cruel, cane on finger tips, taking my biscuit money for the 'holy souls' but I think I had a good education. To blame the present pope for the past is surely like blaming Angela Merkel for Hitlers crimes
caslass, this is Pope Benedict's own past, not that of his predecessors. It is pretty unusual, for a pope. He was born Joseph Alois Ratzinger, which I guess is what JJ had in mind.
You have slighty misunderstood. I am not blaming the present pope at all. It is the Institution that is corrupt. Saying that, I cannot understand how anyone would wish to convert to it. All catholic parents must bring up their children as catholics so this is a self perpetuating Institution and has a fail safe method of ensuring its continuation in forbidding contraception so that the masses in poorer countries cannot fail to have several children.
I am neither agreeing or arguing with any one. When my only child was born, he was not brought up in the cattholic faith. Not because of their beliefs but because I wanted him to be treated better than I was.
rjukl JJ
I am a commited catholic and find your views offensive I have a wife and two children who choose not to follow my beliefs its easy to point the finger at someone who has opinons you do not agree with but do not put the blame on the pope he is elected to do gods work on earth and will sort out the current problems.

Compare the corruption at westminster at the moment !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
milliezoe- you cannot compare greed over money to abuse to children, that's insane.
