checking d drive for consostency

i turned on my Win Xp and a blue screen came up and said [one of your Disc needs to be checked for consistency, checking file system on "D", This type of file is NFTS] How can I correct this problem?? then it started saying dealting index and as soon as i saw this i turned my whole comp off and when i pluged my d drive back in ! some photos are missing please someone help im a photographer and i need these photosgraphs its my life !! how cani get them back are they somewhere where i can recover the m!! i dont know much bout comps help somone !!

I can't help with your specific problem as it is beyond my capability. It does sound serious. I assume you do not make backups of your important files.
I speak from personal experience when I say that is foolish. If any files are important to you then backup copies should always be kept.
When you get this fixed I really do recommend that you get something like another large capacity external hard drive and use that to make copies of everything important. There are lots of programs that can do this, both free and paid for. I use DriveImage XML which is good enough for my needs. Others are Norton Ghost, Acronis something etc. If you google backup software you will get lots of choice.
If ChuckFickens or VHG post an answer pay attention to what they say. Both have helped me in the past.

You need to let the check disk complete. Do NOT switch it off as you will lose files this way. Go into My Computer and right click on D: drive, choose properties then tools and click on check now under "error checking".
Your PC will say something like, "I can't do this now, do you want me to do it when I reboot?", answer yes then reboot your PC. Let the check finish and you should hopefully be ok. If they are still missing and you have no backup, a specialist computer repairer MAY be able to recover them but don't hold your breath.
The indexes being deleted are how Windows refers to your files, not the actual files themselves. The link isn't what happened to you, as you switched the PC off while it was trying to sort the disk out.

If Windows thinks it was not shut down properly, or if a removable drive is disconnected while in use, then the next time the drive is accessed, Windows will check the drive to ensure that it has not been corrupted. Unless the drive is physicallt damaged, 99 times out of 100, any problems will be sorted automatically (especially on an NTFS formatted drive).
If Windows is repairing the drive, and you turn it off, you are simply ensuring that further damage is done to the file system.
If you had allowed the program to continue, you might have lost nothing. Anything you did lose might have been recoverable. As it is, I doubt that you will be able to recover anything now.

I would aggree that there is a high chance that the files you have no lost are gone for good (you really shouldn't have turned the computer off! but we learn from our mistakes, bet you'll be backing up now!)
I would try running some file recovery software on the drive though if the pics are that important, it will take a couple of hours to run but you may be lucky and it will recover the lost pics.

funny thing is that i have a backup of every photo but there was a few folders that i had to put on there fast as i was going on holiday and those are the one that went missing which takes the mic seeing as this has never happened before , thing is i broght my harddrive external for that exact reason and its the one thats gone funny kinda sucks
well i turned my computor off as i usually would ? so why would this corrupt my d drive also i have seen things like this in the past and didnt want to chanse it deleating my stuff as it looked like it was dealting when it said dealting indexs i didnt like the sound of it so i just turned it off incase it was a virus
