I think I have all the answers, unclued entries and writer, but am left with a possible second ambiguity!
Have I made a mistake or am I missing something?

Rollo: My possible ambiguity is in 21down
I had this anagram of implode.

Rollo: The other ambiguity is resolved by the writer, but this one, I then L or L then I in the barred-off cells?
MLN:RUGBY, if you consider the quote, you'll see that the seven down clues all keep the original first and last letters on entry, so the first barred-off cell, as the opening letter, must be the I, and the other one the L

Turnerjmw: Thanks.
I've just come back online after staring at the grid and figuring it out from the quotation! ;-)
Found this Inquisitor the hardest for some time!!
Yes, Kea's puzzles are never easy, but he is regarded as one of the very best Listener setters. A lovely puzzle called Admission a few weeks ago was a tour de force in construction. I think an effort has been made to make the Inquistor of similar standard to the Listener recently, and some have certainly been pretty tough, notably the poets and lottery one. Doubtless not to everyone's taste, but I've enjoyed them
We found Inquisitor 141 reasonably easy but didn't like 26 down. 'my country' seems a poor clue for 'our'.
