I can find words to fit in but can't work out why. Its not beyond the bounds of possibility that some of the letters are wrong.

24a Earnest - I took it to be "(Thou) art deserving", thus 'earnest', which is also a pledge

17d Esparto - (Snak)E + 'part' (in) 'so'

Thank you once again. I have looked long and hard at other letters and convinced myself they were all spot on but you got it I spelt the word that was spelt for me wrong!
