How far does the inline fuse have to be from the battery???

I need to know how far from the battery i can put my inline fuse.
and for 4GA wire what amp fuse do i need... its gonna be running 4GA to a DIST box and then have two 8GA wires coming out 1 to power my 2Channel to power my two 6x9's, and the other to power my mono block 500w or somthing witch is going to power my TWO subs
