A geriatric dog is about to be euthanised. Can anyone point me towards words to add to a photo card of Ben to give solace to its owners, my neighbours & best friends?

My copy is in storage, so I haven't got access to it, but you may find something suitable in "I'll Always Love You" ( http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/051757265
6/ref=sr_aps_books_1_1/026-2779543-1584426
), a story about a young boy whose dog gets old and passes on, but he knows that she realised he loved her because he told her so every night.
Perhaps you could modify the material on the web-page you'll find by clicking http://www.farpan.net/canineeulogy.html
On my photo of my departed pet, I put her name, her years of birth and death, and the message 'a pet, a pal, and a pooch' (something I used to call her when she was alive).
See my message to you under 'words for a funeral'
I'm sure you have already completed this task, but for future reference, the "Rainbow Bridge" story is beautiful. It's perfect for any pet owner, especially those with children who will have to deal with the loss of a special friend. A generalized search for "Rainbow Bridge or The Rainbow Bridge" will usually bring up the story.
