can fleas survive in a house without a pet to feed on?or even infest without a pet at all?

fleas can definitely survive in a house without a pet to feed on as I remember seeing a tv programme where they sealed off a room with fleas and no-one entered for, I can't remember whether it was, months or years, but as soon as the presenter entered the room, he was immediately covered in them. yeuk making me itch just thinking about it now.

Jules001 is correct - flea larvae can survive on carpets for up to two years (typically only 6 months though!) without feeding.

And it is possible for an adult flea to be carried into the house on somebody and then set up camp in the carpet, no pets involved!
