If you let the hoi poloi loose on any piece of equipment without the benefit of instructions and / or supervision, someone will break it. It's just a fact of life.

Sorry.

they may not be out of order. compressed air is expensive to make. it would take a large electrical motor to work the pump that compresses the air. so it could cost the garage owner more to operate the compressor than they could make from charging a few pence to let us use them !

Both responses make a lot of sense! Andy - completely agree, especially knowing the kind of people that live in this city (won't mention names!) and funkymoped this also makes a lot of sense as the majority of air pumps round here are free!
i feel your pain Nicky. Its bloody annoying when it takes half a day to locate a working air pump!
The best way to overcome this problem is to buy your own compressor. I bought one of those emergency start units which contains a battery to start your car if its battery fails, an air compressor and guage to blow up your tyres, airbeds, etc, a light and two cigar lighter sockets to plug accessories into. It only cost 29 and has saved my bacon several times when I have tried to start the car and the battery was flat.
