Good morning, a very interesting offering by Chalicea with “Strauss work?” in the Crossword Centre. My grid is almost complete, but my weakness persists with discovering the misprints. Help with the following will be appreciated. Many thanks in advance!

( PREAMBLE: 30 lies between 15 and 36 ( all unclued ). Solvers must appropriately shade 26 cells including the correct state, and obey a further instruction given by corrections of misprints appearing in the definition parts of 18 clues. )  www.crossword.org.uk/strauss.html

Sorry, Bobbinwales, I forgot about your hint - it made me chuckle at the time!

Grateful, NACW, bobbinwales, ProfessorMaisie, roslyn252254, for this learning exercise! Many thanks for the witty hint, bobbinwales! Now, to put this one to rest! I’ve shaded the state of 12 cells in 36a, that leaves me with 14 more cells to shade. How do I determine what to shade? And for my edification, can someone give me the words in the clues for the remaining six letters so graciously provided by NACW? ( N, I, O, N, C, E ) Thanks!

Thanks, Matakari. My grid isn't too hand, so I can't reel off all the words for you - sorry!

PS Is there a 'state' in 36 A?

Question Author

Yes, the state in 36a is San Francisco ( BAY ).

That's a city, Matakari - the state (abbreviated) follows the structure that is the theme of the puzzle.

Not doing it so dont know how it works.... but San Fran is a city not a state??

Matakari, glad you're no longer in a state! Hoping you manage the shading now.

Matakari, have you worked out yet what is to be shaded? Following the instruction should have led you to have a clearer picture(!). As an extra hint, symmetry helps  -symmetry in the grid and symmetry following the instruction.

Question Author

No, this is not possible, I've been staring at this for ever so long, and nothing! My brain must be scorched now...and to think that the answers to most of the clues flowed so nicely...This is not the Chalicea I thought I knew...I'll probably take a breather and come to it, something might happen...

Matakari, I think you have your rose-coloured spetaccles on, you have had gruelling experiences with the last two Chalicea puzzles!  (You asked tor help with about 40 superfluous letters in one of them.

I think you are probably over-thinking the endgame, and over-staring.  The theme itself is the 'Strauss work', which you'l have as you have filled in the unclued entry. If you look at the grid, you will see there are two five-letter features - ie features of the theme.  You simply apply the instruction to that. As for the highlighting... you will want to see the finished article... appropriately coloured.

Question Author

Thanks, NACW, I've plunged again into Joseph Strauss's work and when I go over the grid, the only two five-letter words that seem to have some bearing on this are 21a LATHE and 18d TOWER. What misery is this?

Thanks, Matakari, the 'two five-letter features' are the same and they are an integral part of.... the structure. If you 'appropriately shade' those and the big long line across one row (including the correct state)  you will have 26 cells. And have another look at a picture! Where could you/one possibly add  suspension cable?

Matakari. I mentioned 'two five-letter features', you chose to look for five-letter words!

Question Author

Good morning, another look at Strauss’s work and an understanding of the two five-letter features reveals one feature in 12d (ONTOWER? ) and the other one? I think I’ll have to put this one aside for some time and come back later with a fresh view.
Going to have a look at the Genius though the superfluous letter aspect is not my bag of tea. Will still be thrilled by discovering some of the answers to the clues and the jigsaw part of it.

Matakari, check how many towers can be seen  in the grid...

Question Author

Yes, yesterday I mentioned the other tower at 18d which stands on its own...and if I add those two with the long answer at 30a I have my 26, but the state?

Matakari,I'm out, so this is rushed. The state was given to you yesterday, you maybe overlooked it. And you need it to get the correct number of cells to highlight,

PS, as I'm out, my last post was done from memory, from me trying to picture the grid. I hope it's all ok.   You should have enough to go on by now anyway.

Question Author

You said the state was given to me yesterday, but I probaly overlooked it in a fit of frustration. Could you give it to me again? Thanks for putting an end to my misery!

From yesterday, Matakari -

'the state (abbreviated) follows the structure'.
