Scottish Government to help refugee families:

A new £100,000 scheme has been launched by the Scottish Government to support people with living costs and essential items upon their arrival, removing the delay caused by UK benefit assessment rules.
Equalities Secretary Angela Constance said: “Too many people arriving in Scotland under family reunion arrangements are forced to start their new life in abject poverty because they cannot apply for support until they arrive here.
“When you consider that these people have been separated from their families, have fled their home – often under threats of violence and death – that is not acceptable.

“Scotland is a welcoming country and we want everyone who chooses it as their new home to be able to do so with a sense of safety, security and hope for their future here".

I thank God every day that I live in Scotland.

I was unaware of the subject issue of this post but good on the Scottish Government. However, reading all the above I am fascinated how one can "pigeon hole" almost everyone posting as to which part of the UK they come from based on the true-to-origin comments they make, not least the snide/derogatory ones on all things Scottish.

I don't thank God for anything. I think people only use that as just a saying. However, I can be thankful for things. Not sure if living in Scotland would be one of them though!
To give a start to those who are rightfully here sounds a wonderful plan Maggie.
do you have a link?
Well I suppose the Scottish Assembly has got to spend its increased income tax on something. I could think of better things, however, mainly those that would be likely to benefit those people being forced to shell out more of their hard-earned.
And I never thought. This scheme may help Ms Sturgeon take in a refugee. I seem to recall she and Yvette Cooper-Balls promising to do so during the "crisis" a couple of year's ago. I don't think her promise has been fulfilled yet. Mrs Balls has an excuse as she had to help her husband train to go dancing on the telly but I don't think Ms Sturgeon has any excuses.
Welcome, welcome all , it must be something to do with the name Angela.
Star mixing the cement, that wall needs a little work doing on it.

//I don't thank God for anything. I think people only use that as just a saying.// Not in my case Clarion, I have a lot to thank God for and being born in Scotland is just one of them.
NJ, Scotland has taken in lots of refugees, many in my own city and they have been made welcome and are integrating into the community.
There is the answer......send all the fugees up to Scotland.
Excellent offer from Scots, hope theres no ‘egg on face’ when none take it up

Wow tartan Burqas, very fetching.
Just so that no one falls for the myth that Scotland is more "welcoming" than the rest of Britain.

//The YouGov poll of 1,100 Scottish adults for the BBC found that 49 per cent think the level of immigration to Britain should be reduced, a level in line with a different survey conducted across Great Britain last year. A further 15 per cent said they would like to see it stopped completely.//

Just the op then.

I don't know how far £100,000 as a " Family Reunion Crisis Grant" will go. Is that for one re-unified family per year, or what?

Nice to see the Scots doing something positive about the traditional "canny Scot" (i.e. "mean bustard") stereotype. However, the proposed legislation will compel the rest of us to dig deeper into our pockets too. This from the link (stress - if it works - by me):

"Earlier this year, a bill introduced by SNP MP Angus MacNeil passed its second reading in the House of Commons, which would expand the definition of family members permitted to come to the UK under reunion rules and to reintroduce legal aid for refugees in England and Wales[i. The UK is one of very few countries which [i]only] allows spouses or children under 18 to join refugees."

Does anyone know the expanded meaning of "family" which is being proposed? In the States, which has a very generous definition for the purposes of re-unification, not just dozens, but hundreds of people can end up in America on the basis of a single "family" connection.
"NJ, Scotland has taken in lots of refugees,..."

Good for them. The more Scotland takes in the fewer England will be lumbered with and hopefully they will use their additional income tax to provide the funding. But has Nicola Sturgeon taken in the one she promised she would?

AOG I find your last comment extremely offensive - but hey, wouldn't expect anything else from you.
I thought it was funny!
so did I.
//The more Scotland takes in the fewer England will be lumbered with//
But the proposed legislation (cited above) will give more "family members" (over and above the current stingy "spouse and children only" rule) the right to be re-united with refugees already settled in England and Wales.
