Although this is a US site, it gives a good summary of the possible reasons for steering wheel noise:
https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/creaking-noise-when-turning-the-steering-wheel-inspection
(Scroll down to 'Common reasons for this to happen').

The first thing to check though is that the power steering fluid is fully topped up, as low levels can lead to noise from the steering system.
f the car has not been driven for six months there's every chance there is a build up of rust on the cars Rotors ( Disks) when the car was last used had it been raining? if so, with the car standing rust builds up on the Rotors ( Disks) & after running the car for a few miles it should clear.
But to be on the safe side take it to a garage.

I was driving when my power steering went...quite dangerous.

TWR. I think joko is referring to the driver's steering wheel, not the road wheels.
The steering columns of most cars are supported op and bottom on needle roller bearings. They can suddenly disintegrate. If it is that, there is usually little danger (but a lot of noise). However in some circumstances they can seize suddenly meaning you cannot steer the car. Get it checked out asap.

Thread Title suggests Steering Wheel imo.

thanks all - yes its the steering wheel that the noise is coming from.

it wasnt driven for about 6months well over a year ago now - and its been making the noise ever since, it was very bad at first but has eased a bit over time.
we thought that it had rusted or something and figured it would clear over time, with more driving, but it hasnt
(i only make short journeys and often a few weeks can pass without me using it, but its been over a year - long enough for it to have cleared by now surely?

I have messaged my mechanic now though, hoping he can help me lubricate it or something

thanks all
The steering wheel doesn't actually have moving contact with anything. It is the steering column which contacts other parts of the steering mechanism.
