Possibly. The use of the word protegee would suggest a student or follower of Shylock who was a moneylender in The Merchant of Venice.
Yes, I can't parse it. An heir could be a protege. Not specific to Shylok though.
Not sure if it is significant that the clue uses the feminine protégée.

The second letter of the clue is S and not E as I mistakenly listed earlier. The correct answer, I believe, is "Usur" - a practitioner of Usury (illegal moneylending).
I thought it might be 'EBER' but you all have 'e' as the second letter !!!!
