Thank you Lie-In King. I was hoping that answer would get me started but I'm afraid that I'm going to have to admit to defeat with this one. I can't get the hang of it at all!
Hmm - I've just had another look at the puzzle (I haven't been near an Azed for years) & I'd say the 1st down clue goes from the 'W' in 'wersh' -

Women’s hat, worn but repaired, a good buy in Edinburgh

Wanworth (Scot. "bargain") - 'w(omen's)' + anag 'hat worn'
