This is the first time for ages that I've nearly finished the crossword, I'm just stuck on one clue. 44 across: P, 16th letter of alphabet? You might do this with a check in Webster's (5 two words) P?Y IN I'd love also to understand the wordplay.
Thanks in advance.

Pay in - 'check' is the American spelling (Webster's Dict.) of 'cheque'
I had Pay In, what you'd do with a cheque. Webster's (American) dictionary would be relevant if you were paying in a 'check'.
Webster's is a bank.
should have said 'also'
P + ayin (16th letter of Hebrew alphabet)
Thanks for that, Calibax - I hadn't noticed that bit, it is very clever! (As are you, of course.)
New to me as well, ta Calibax :-)
