Is there anyway you can find out if your local or nearby library has a book you would like to read?

Sometimes you can check online.
Sometimes you can 'phone and ask.
Sometimes you can wander in and ask.
Sometimes you can reserve it if it is out.
Sometimes they can order a copy in for you if you request it.
Assuming you have a particular book in mind know the name of the book/author?
Ring them up and ask them - or pop in if it's local to you
Sorry- some words seemed to disappear from mine

Yes I have rung my local library but you won't believe it - the librarian asked me to spell grapes, and my name but after a few minutes repeating the name of the books (2) I finally got through to his head - that is why I wanted to know if I could look myself. Ta all for your replies.

jackthehat - how can you check online - just noticed your post. If I go to my libraries they just give me info like address and tele number.
You could e-mail them....or some larger libraries have a searchable database.
Which library are you a member of? Is it a City or town?
Jenny, try this site. It searches libraries in your area

https://www.overdrive.com/

She said sometimes you can check online I would imagine she didn't need to say 'if you're library allows you to do that' because if you're library doesn't have that service you can't do it.
If the Library is computerised they can check the details for you they should be able to tell you if the book is available.Have you got the title and author if so they can check. There are book lists and magazines which the Library would have access to. Good Luck with your search

LOL Yes I know I can order via telephone which I have just done but I was wondering since everything so digitalised that I coulda looked myself - books are ordered rather one is - the other one was CD (no good to me as I am corned beef)
Do a Google search for your library and then connect to their website. It's almost certain that the first page will have a "search" box on it - just type in the book title and see what comes back. There's often an option to reserve the book - some libraries charge a fee.
I cannot imagine any library in the UK (and NI) that doesn't allow you to log in online and check for and reserve books.

I am a member of lots of libraries throughout the UK and they all have searchable databases of books, ebooks, dvds and cds.
Question Author
Sandy that was a very good link - Thank you.
Many public library online catalogues are arranged by counties. Look up (say) Warwickshire public libraries, Hampshire public libraries, or wherever, and then click through to their on-line catalogues. You may be able to restrict your search to your own branch, or you may find you are searching the whole county. Still, in most counties you will be able to borrow from any public library in the system. The book you want will ( eventually) be delivered to your own branch. Even if the county does not hold the title you want, you can ask for an Inter-Library loan, which in most cases will cost a fiver or so.
