Just to be pedantic wails/whales are not true homophones; the h in the latter is significant.
Debatable. The aspirate h may have been dropped over the years in common speech but originally there was a difference in pronunciation. The same with witch/which and watt/what. The h used to be sounded at the beginning of the word.
I agree, it just doesn't seem common now
Whales is not pronounced the same as wails, it's hwales the way I and a lot of other folk pronounce it.
