Clot (fool) hears ( not deaf)
cloth ears means deaf. A clot hears so isn't deaf

LOL. That's a good one. Thanks!
Could it be that persons working in the cloth mills of the 18th and 19th Century were all deaf from working long hours in extreme machinery noise and so were referred to as having "cloth ears" ie extremely deaf?
