Oh I see- you mean teh answer is KNEADS BREAD. That makes more sense if teh E is wrong
Don't think so. Anyway it doesn't fit the pattern given by the OP.
He needs money, so he works to make money, hence he makes bread.
Wrong person of the verb, though (kneads)
Dough and bread both being slang terms for money I think the only issue is whether it is makes or bakes, or something else.
1d Is bread definite as it could be Makes Money if he needs dough
sorry, didn't scroll down enough.
I'm inclining towards makes, but we will only know when we get the answer, or at least the clue, to 1a.
Have we got the full clue for 7d?
And have we settled on an answer for 17d?

Need scooke to get back to us really.....

Could 7d be line ball? If so regina does not fit 2d
What is the clue for 2d ?

We do not have the paper and can only go by your posts.
2d Mad again, we hear Mozarts put her name to music

2d mad again, we hear,Mozarts put her name to music (6) ???i?a
it's the clue to 1a that we need to settle this.
Which is still outstanding and any definite letters. Already been pointed out the debriefed fits the grid, but not the clue.
I am referring to the bread clue. I am assuming that there is a 1a clue to check, otherwise it's ambiguous, which is something any decent setter would avoid.

So 1d is either makes bread or bakes, the 7d 8a fit in as second letter so makes or bakes both fit
7d & 8a is this must follow-- - once out of play in GAA (4,4) so that line make line ball fit in
One more thing, scooke- is that the exact clue for 17d, please?
Scooke, for the nth time of asking, can you give us either the clue or the answer to 1 across, Please!!!
