4D (normal clue, which still eludes me): Upright author appears from poem, reading this: m*st. I just can't work this one out.

Thank you. It mast be must, or vice versa...
I think the intention is that reading 'M AS T' in poeM gives you poeT (ie author), the definition of the whole being 'upright'. I have to say that Azed does this sort of clue rather better, as 'poem' amd 'poet' are just two views of the same thing (compare Azed's classic 'My letters could make lad sad (4)').
Ah, of course, LISS, I remember her torment well!

I had actually figured that but was attempting to make a joke.
