Of course we don't know the whole story but it all seems rather harsh to me - I think Derbyshire Social Services have a lot to answer for in all this. She obviously loves her granddaughter.

You are right, we don't know the whole story. There must be a lot more behind this.
She wasn't jailed for hugging her granddaughter, she was jailed for breaking an order banning her from physical contact with her granddaughter.
The reasons for the imposition of that ban are conspicuous by their absence.
^^ was going to say exactly what shoota said.
There has to be a reason why she's not allowed to hug her granddaughter, surely.
Yes there is far more to this. As always the 'Daily Wail' is only giving us the bits that make it's story. We need the reason why she was banned from physical contact with her granddaughter. It must be a serious case for such a drastic step by the social services to be granted. Remember such a drastic step must have been authorised by a magistrate or judge!
The photos are very obviously posed by the 'Wail' to maximise it's story
yes, the reporter seems to have failed to inquire why there was an order in force. Fancy that!

The police response sounds harsh - stopping her taking her medication, for instance. But the reporter also seems not to have asked the police about this.

So, half a story.
This case goes back years when the grandaughter was taken into care...

"The granny, who lives in Orkney, had travelled down to Derby to meet her beloved young relation in defiance of a 2007 court order, which has allowed them only to have “supervised contact” by telephone once a month."
In the article and photos she certainly doesn't come across as a frail old granny.
Could've been worse...she might have had to sit through a Ken Dodd performance instead!
cheeky, B00! (Maybe the sentence was to sit through two of them.)
I find it hard to believe she was refused her medication. She was in contempt of a court order yet believes she is entitled to compensation.
yes, she can't exactly complain about being treated like a common criminal, since it appears she is one.
People in custody are not allowed to possess medication for obvious reasons.
If they claim to need medication they are assessed by a divisional surgeon who will decide whether their need is genuine or not.
Presumably liver pills were deemed to be not essential.
It's the Daily Mail - can't believe a word of it.
mentalhealthlaw? Looks like there's quite a lot we haven't heard.
Liver pills (Carter's or Beecham's) was a term to describe a laxative, easily obtainable over the counter.
She is showing scant regard for her granddaughter by going to the papers. The granddaughter is subject to the Court of Protection for reasons we cannot know but anyone who knows the family will now be aware of that fact.
From the report:
"daily medicine she needs to combat her liver disease."

If she does have liver disease it won't be Beechams powders that she takes.
