Thanks as always, Daniel.
Oh dear, i completely misunderstood the preamble and made very heavy work of this, which really was quite striaghtforward - must read things at face value!!
Liked 9a and 41a - clever clues!
Thanks again Daniel for the trouble you go to.

I think there could two possible answers to 35a !
The last Spectator I bought was 30 August (crossword 2177)

I never really try the Spectator crossie.

Is it popular? Should I maybe give it a go? Or is it really difficult?
Hi JJ

Like most crosswords it depends on the compiler. The ones set by
DOC(who is also the Spectator crossword editor) are consistently
the easiest to solve.
I think that the one you cite 2177 - The Kate Bush theme was
middle range.
If you are familiar with barred grid cryptics you will find the
Spectator puzzles enjoyable.

Okay, K

I'm going to buy the Spectator when I go to Waitrose, and give it a go.

Alternatives for 35a, K? - Yes, but the 'A' variant doesn't really conform to the preamble's Chambers condition, does it?
Quite right Ironie.

Thanks for pointing it out.

Joggerjayne, if I can do these then I am sure that you can as well.
Daniel, thanks as always. I do hope that, should I become a foreigner overnight next week, you will continue to send me the Speccie.

As a foreigner, I thank Daniel.
Thanks a bunch, Daniel.
Ironie and kayakamina,
I've gone for the 'A' version, which is in Chambers 12th, although only the 'U' version is in Bradfords.
Anyway, I've learnt what an inflected headword is!
