Struggling with last two entries.

Second entry in Row E, which I think is clued from: 'in short etc.'

Second entry in Row I, which I think is clued from:' filling up to etc.'

Nudges gratefully received.

Hi boreas, I think you're looking for a word for which 'a' is an abbreviation, and filthy denotes an anagram - does that help?

I'm strugging with the other one too unfortunately..

Can you help with the 2nd entry in Row G - I think it's
'limits to payments written out for Scottish borders.' (5) PA-DS

Many thanks!

Many thanks Oudemia,

PARDS, which Chambers defines as Scots word for 'valance'.
Hence, 'borders'.
Pands - P and S

Mea culpa!
It is, of course, PANDS.
Slip of the pen.
Thank you Calibax.

I've just now got TALES - obscure word with definition being 'filling up',
but can't parse the clue.
Tales is a writ empanelling 12 jurors
thank you for that!
It seems to me that the down clues do not have the two phrases applied in the way the instructions say. For example, 19d is in an even column but I cannot see any choice other than to use the first part of the phrase. Similarly 5 & 6 seem to need the 2nd part...
Surely it's the odd numbered clues for coulumn entries that the first part of the phrase applies to, rather than clues for entries in odd columns ?
Question Author
yes, at first I thought it was odd/even columns like bear69.
But on reading the preamble again more carefully, it's odd/even clue numbers.
