he wasn't, and he should do a long stretch a her Majesty's pleasure
Perhaps we should make being a "chav" a criminal offence. all convicted of such should be imprisoned on a large obsolete ocean going liner. when said liner is full up it could be towed out into the Atlantic and used as bombing/torpedo practice by RAF/RN.
For causing that amount of panic and unnecessary cost, 10 years should suffice.
He would be "slightly inebriated" one would imagine. This does not excuse the very serious offence of causing fire at sea and endangering life. We heard about this while taking a lifeboatman to Scarborough A and E where the casualties were taken. Meanwhile two lifeboats further down the coast had been launched (£2k a go) and were standing by during the emergency.

Keelhauling seems appropriate.
A Geordie on a ferry at quarter to eleven on Saturday Night.

Just asking for trouble.
Geordies are from Newcastle Gromit, NOT Sunderland.
don't they flog them round the fleet any more, seadogg?

Once he'd been all round the DFDS ferries, he wouldn't do that again in a hurry.
Is he a mackerel then or something?
I'm surmising pissed, fell asleep smoking in the cabin, full on emergency response ensues - with added mate and affray

any right minded liberal would insist on a sharp talking to, anger management training, alcohol awareness courses and compulsory NRT therapy..

or a good slap and about three months

What fleet would that be jno?
DFDS, like I said.
sloopy, that was also my guess, though I'm not sure how the affray came in. If so, hanging from the yardarm might be slightly harsh for not putting a ciggy out properly.
I thought he'd fallen asleep with a cigarette, but arson suggests it was deliberate?
presumably, pixie; we'll just have to see what the court thinks.
Not sure but the furnishings in those cabins should be non combustible.
He probably would have died had he been home alone, from the smoke.
How much has all this cost the shipping company? Can they recover any of their expenses?
I'm surprised they're allowed to smoke in cabins at all. Would have thought outside only.
Remember a chief steward on these cruise- ferry ships saying that some of the tricks these people get up to make smoking pale into insignificance

I'd have thought all the furnishings would be fire retardant and the fact that he's charged with arson implies more than an accident. Could have been hundreds dead, any punishment should reflect that.
