Many thanks as ever.
Mmm - as you say interesting.
Thanks Daniel. Certainly food for thought here!
Thanks as always Daniel.

My old eyes can barely read the small print & I'm not sure I'm going
to bother as I don't really enjoy this type of puzzle.
This is great fun. I have a slight problem with 37 Down - is there a superfluous word in that part of the story? (I feel I would be duplicating something if I enter the answer I have in mind).

Sorry - this will make sense only to those who have a copy of this crossword.
I have a solution for 37d which fits:do you also have crossers ?O?AD ???
How about 1d: isn't it TWO words?
And the following Lochs are proving v. hard to find (maybe I've got s'thing wrong):
after 31, down:CRER?N
Column 10 top: CAROY ???
" 11 top: ?CR?SORT
" 3 : C?OLISPORT
Any help appreciated, goes w'out saying!
For 37 I currently have ?a?a? (and thought the 2 words would be ?a? a?)
Your Crer?n is correct, as is C?olisport. Oh, and ?cresort is correct too.
I agree about 1 D.
Thanks, Nevera...! Now I see yr prob w 37d more clearly!
Do you have a name for the last one across then? If it's E?R?E I can't find one, though the Golf Club is once written EARNE in Google (but that seems to be an error).
If you have s'thing better, can you "betray" the 2nd letter?!
I have the same for you re the last loch - I don't like 'earne' as I can't confirm the spelling anywhere. Further mulling needed...
Seems a bit unlikely that Doc has made a mistake with 1d AND 37d, but maybe we can enquire s'where on the Speccie site?
I decided that 1 D should have been listed as two words and that there should be a bar after the 'n' in 'earn'. (I think I was right about 37 D, so maybe Doc or the proofreader was having an off day?)
That's a good idea with the additional bar: didn't think of that when I wrote my comment on the site. Is the comment site meant only for competitors, or does s'one from the paper ever answer qq regarding poss. errors, do you know?
Doc (Tom Johnson) can be contacted by e-mail on [email protected].
Thanx 4 the tip: didn't know that.
I seem to be missing a loch!? I have 9 across ones and 12 downs. Where am I missing one please?
I think - from a quick once-over - that I have 13 Down lochs.
Thanks neveracrossword - I missed the one like 39a.
Have you found all 22 in the text?
If 10D is Caroy as suggested supra, have difficulty with the loch cutting across. I have ET??E. I think Ethoe rather obscure.
And is 9d really a royal castle?
9d yes queen mother spent her childhood there

10d isn't caroy - it's one of those from the text

ETIVE
Doc has confirmed in a mail we were right with all 3 points: it is indeed 2 words in 1d, there should be an additional vertical bar before the bottom right last letter, and 37 d does indeed produce the repetition of a 2-letter word in the clue! Apologies from him to all!
Maurice, thanks for the update.
