Thanks. slaney.
I have 33a as SECTOR but this doesn't fit with the encrypted version of 1d.
???
It fits for me Boreas.
oops! got my X and Y back to front.
Many thanks Slaney
so, is 29a one of the names?
I see now that it is

I now know what the 'in common' (mentioned in the preamble) is, but am nowhere near finished. Can I just ask if all the words that finally appear in the grid are real words? Thanks.
Question Author
I've answered my own question, so am charging on with this!
I've finished apart from 42a and 36d. Wouldn't mind a hint with either.
Question Author
Boreas, I've four or five answers still to get - including your two. Will post again if I get them!
Thanks Neverecrossword, I've got those two now and finished
Question Author
Boreas, well done! I now have only 42 A, 9 D and 36 D left to get/finish off. Any little tips - not answers - would be great. (I'm struggling to find the last themed person/s).
Question Author
Phew! I now just need 9D - I worked my way through the dictionary for 36 D, which then leaf to 42 A. I'm assuming 9 D is the last themed answer, though I'll have to count the ones I have.
42a is a word with 2 meanings - Hotel, and Governor.
9d is one of the theme names ( a person who has written several books on English usage).
36d is a word I'd never heard of. One meaning is a rectangular piece of cloth worn as a garment, the other is a frame for drying cheese?
Is that enough, or shall I go a bit further?
Question Author
Thanks, boreas - I mentioned that I had managed to get 42 and 36, but thanks for the nudge re 9 D. I think I'm all done now. I appreciate the help I've had.
There is one thing I haven't got - the title PLY.

Wondering if there is any connection to the common name, but can't really see one. Can you?
Question Author
All I came up with (don't laugh) is that the last word of the play is ???????, and the word is ?????? (removing the 'a' - so play becomes ply).
Well, that's the only thing I could think of, too!
It's either as simple as that - or as clever as that.
If you look up the meaning of what the ten have in common in a previous edition of Chambers - first appendix - it means the same as the second definition of ply in Chambers.
