I guess 2 down is petrol and maybe 1 down is yale but I can't figure out the yl, it is just the only blue that fits!

1d. I thought it might be SAXE - but other than six being half a dozen and minus one being taken by A can't really justify my answer though 'saxe' is a blue. Be grateful for any further thoughts. Is Yale a shade of blue?

Comeragh you are right, I couldn't find saxe in the dictionary ... so for hairyanne the word 'six' take away the i and Bob's ylour uncle.
BTW yale is a blue but yl no use!
